Undiagnosed Learning Disabilities In College Students

August 27th, 2011

It is not uncommon for intelligent students to get by, or even excel, in high school, then arrive at college and hit a wall. This is particularly confusing to students who are accustomed to doing well without working particularly hard or efficiently. When their first semester college grades come in, and they are considerably lower than those they earned in high school, both students and parents are confused. Parents may wonder if their teen’s attitude toward college is cavalier, whether he/she is doing too much partying and too little work, etc. Students wonder why their methods worked well in high school but don’t work now. Once parents are convinced that, truly, their teen is taking college seriously, they should suggest the student speak to someone in the Counseling Center or visit their academic advisor.

The National Benefit Authority Defines Disabilities

August 15th, 2011

The National Benefit Authority and other similar organizations have been helping Canadians with disabilities receive the tax benefits that are available to them from the government, and ensuring that these citizens are maximizing their benefits, for many years. One of the services they offer is helping disabled persons in Canada determine whether they qualify for tax benefits from the government in the first place. Once they have made this determination, they take all the steps to help disabled persons and their loved ones receive the tax breaks and other assistance they are qualified for, which they surely deserve.

How to Define a Disability

Answering the question of “what is a disability” can be tough. This is one of the reasons why so many people turn to organizations like The National Benefit Authority in the first place. The answer to this question is not always obvious, but the Canadian government authorities will determine some sort of answer that will decide whether you are awarded disability tax benefits or not. To the average person, the idea of what a disability is could be something they can see, such as a person who needs a cane or wheelchair to get down the street. Some disabilities can’t be so easily seen, though, such as an elderly person going through memory loss or a child suffering from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

List of Learning Disabilities

August 15th, 2011

There are a few learning disabilities that affect our children from progressing at the rate we would like them to. Parents who have children with disabilities are challenged daily with one thing or the other depending on the disability.

Teachers in schools are trained to identify such disabilities at an early age. They are the ones in most cases who spot it firsthand and notify the parents. The parents in return take the child to be evaluated to rule out any possibilities. If the doctor confirms there is a disability the next step is treatment.

Here are the most common learning disabilities found in schools:

Dyslexia

This learning disability I would say is the most common in our classrooms today. It affects the child’s ability to read, spell and write. Reading becomes very difficult and if not detected early the child can become frustrated.

He may show signs of depression, resentment towards school and in some cases low self-esteem.

Dyscalculia

This disability affects the child’s ability to comprehend mathematics. They have problems understanding multiplication tables, addition, subtraction, division and basic mental arithmetic. Being able to differentiate between right and left can be a problem.

Dyscalculia is the lesser known of these learning disabilities and is so often not recognized. However if it is recognized at an early age it can be dealt with by using a slightly different approach to teaching.

With most prosthetic knee users concerned about a stumble or a fall, these individuals tend to compensate in their gait and make changes based upon their desire to be as safe as possible. As a result, many prosthetic amputees will prevent their knee from becoming totally straight with each step due a fear of a fall. – This is obviously not ideal and people do not deserve to live in fear of anything as they walk along.

1.) Advancements in Prosthetics

C-Leg technology constantly adjusts to the user’s movements, anticipating what the user is doing and accommodating for every change in their gait cycle in real time. No, this leg does not adjust itself after someone has fallen to the ground. It is much quicker than that. The microprocessor can adjust itself 50 times per second. Moreover, the C-Leg has proven to reduce the number of falls by 64 % when compared to mechanical knees. This form of leg represents the steps that the field of prosthetics has taken to improve the lives of their patients.
