Mental Health Professionals: Getting Your Private Practice on Insurance Panels

August 24th, 2011

Once you decide that you would like to be on insurance panels and accept third-party payment for services, the next step is to get that ball rolling. That is the point where many folks put it on the “to do” list, along with the other things that seem too darn complicated. And there it sits. Don’t let this happen to you!

There is no doubt that getting yourself on insurance panels can take some time and effort, but it does not need to be complicated. The first thing I suggest my clients (I’m a Private Practice Mentor) do first, is to pull together all of the information they will need (over and over again) when making application to each of the insurance companies. Pull together copies of: your license and registration (or their equivalent, depending on the state you are in), your malpractice insurance binder, your degree (for some), and a copy of your resume.

What to Look For in a Mental Health Treatment Facility

August 24th, 2011

Every year, more and more people are suffering from mental health illnesses. The problem exists silently in many families (across the board, regardless to economic or social background) and some find the condition embarrassing. However, hiding from the realities of the problem will not help your family member cope with the condition. What the patient needs is a facility that will cater to their mental health needs. In Kinston, North Carolina, you can find several facilities that help individuals with such problems. Here are a few pointers to help you make the best decision for you or a family member.

Choose the Facility with a Holistic Approach

Mental health problems come disguised in many different size, shapes and colors. People normally suffer from unhealthy mental conditions because of a combination of many diverse reasons. From chemical brain imbalances, to depression, to lack of family support, loss of job, or recent loss of a loved one; all of the noted reasons are potential contributing factors that can take a healthy mental image and turn it into a mental imbalance or mental problem. The best treatment facility must address the condition in a holistic manner. What some trained mental professionals try is to determine the triggering factors that led to the illness and find ways on how to use other aspects of life to avoid further occurrences. » Read more: What to Look For in a Mental Health Treatment Facility

Mental Health Care Outreach and Social Media

August 24th, 2011

f you work in the mental health field, you are a natural born communicator. Can we all agree that there is no counseling without a true command of language? After all, psychiatrists, counselors and social workers must all be well versed in BOTH, the spoken and written word to succeed within their chosen career fields.

Counseling sessions are based on active listening skills and the ability to successfully organize and summarize what the client shares. In addition, everything learned from each client session must be converted to accurate, comprehensive and concise progress notes. The data is often admissible in legal proceedings, so the mental health professional must be able to use an economy of words which express a multitude of thoughts and details. Let’s also just remind everyone that professionalism and field credibility also requires neatness, flawless spelling and grammar and attention to proper syntax. » Read more: Mental Health Care Outreach and Social Media

Differentiating Between Learning Disabilities and ADHD

August 13th, 2011

Even for an experienced medical profession diagnosing a learning disability or mental health condition in children like ADHD can be confusing and less than precise. Put figuratively there is a lot of gray to consider and not too much black and white.

In the case of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, many of the symptoms needed for a diagnosis are symptoms regularly seen in children. For example being easily distracted, impulsiveness, restlessness, high energy levels, and unruliness.

ADHD and learning disabilities are treated differently because it is believed that they are different in both origin and nature. While most learning disabilities can be diagnosed through specialized testing, ADHD requires a more subtle diagnosis based on an objective evaluation of a mountain of forms and first hand behavioral accounts.

Neurological differences in brain structure are general the cause of learning disabilities and make it difficult for children with these types of disorders to process information as effectively as their peers. Rarely do learning disabilities have anything to do with intelligence and are generally not treated with medication unless the learning disability diagnosed is co-existing with another mental health disorder.

Coping with Teenage Depression

August 11th, 2011

Our teenage years may be considered as a difficult stage in our lives. Actions are often misinterpreted around this time and the goal to fit in and achieve balance in life is searched. Adolescents with signs of depression may be misinterpreted as acting out or seeking attention. If not given immediate medical attention, depression can have disruptive effects to the adolescent’s life which the individual can carry on until adulthood. Antidepressants like Paxil are often prescribed in people with depression but some filed Paxil lawsuits because of the unwanted effects of the drug. When faced with this situation, the suffering individual must be reassured that he or she is not alone and that help is available

Some Common Signs of Depression in Teens
Depression can be felt by almost all ages and the symptoms are generally true for all, however there are gender specific or age-related symptoms such as those exhibited by adolescents are they are:

•  Being frequently irritable, sad or annoyed
•  Too much or too little sleep
•  Sudden weigh gain or weight loss without trying to
•  Easily cries on even the most mundane things
•  Degree of concentration is decreased
•  Feels hopeless or helpless even with constant help and reassurance
•  Has thoughts of death and/or suicide

Manage Depression in Teens
If you have observed sudden changes in mood of your teenager that you find rather serious, it would be strongly encouraged to carry out some actions. Prompt actions can give more favourable results more so prevent the occurrence of suicide. When confronted with the signs presented above, you should call your physician or a specialist as soon as possible. If a specialist or physician is not yet available, the following interventions can be made.

•  Support your teenager
Show your teenager that you’ll always have his/her back no matter what happens. However, make sure that you won’t exert yourself too much as teenagers may feel like they’re being patronized which they usually dislike.

•  Learn to listen
Take some time to listen to your adolescent. The teenager wants someone who he/she can freely talk to without being lectured.

• Encourage your teenager to open up
Teenagers generally avoid their parents or primary caregivers because they view them as persons of authority. Generally, parents are encouraged to reach out to their teenagers and establish a connection. In teenage depression, the parents or the primary caregivers should exert more effort to make their teenagers comfortable in sharing their feelings and emotions. However, parents must also remember to respect their children’s privacy and comfort level while trying to bridge the gap.

Depression and Fatigue

August 11th, 2011

Depression and fatigue are two closely related human problems.  Those who are chronically fatigued find it easier to contract depression than the rest of the population.  Alternatively, the depressed portion of the population finds itself suffering from chronic fatigue at rates much higher than average.

This relationship was borne out by a 2004 study by Greek scientist Petros Skapinakis, MD, MHD, PhD.  The study, “Temporal Relations Between Unexplained Fatigue and Depression: Longitudinal Data from an International Study in Primary Care,” was published in Psychosomatic Medicine and followed 3,201 subjects for 12 months.  The object was to clarify the relationship between fatigue and depression.  The results, as expected, showed a strong correlation between fatigue and depression.  Those suffering from chronic depression were more than 4 times as likely to develop unexplained chronic fatigue.  Similarly, those already suffering from unexplained chronic fatigue were nearly 3 times as likely to realise an onset of depression.  The study did not clarify whether the two syndromes caused each other, or were caused by another, independent factor.

This result can be depressing for those currently struggling with mental health issues.  Depression is often compounded with a lack of energy and difficulty sleeping.  The average person struggles to rise out of bed in the morning to go to work.  The depressed person often awakes with an unhappy day awaiting them and no energy to face it.  However, there are some basic steps that can be taken to improve one’s condition.

  1. Exercise regularly- this is perhaps the most important step you can take to combat both fatigue and depression.  Regular exercise helps to relax the body and prepare it for sleep.  Exercise also produces endorphins, which are natural stimulants that improve one’s mood.
  2. Develop a sleep pattern- go to sleep at night and wake up in the morning at the same time every day.  This will help to steady your body’s natural clock.  When your body knows what time to expect sleep, it will subconsciously prepare you to relax and get a full sleep.
  3. Avoid eating full meals right before bed- do not eat large meals 30 min to 1 hour before bed.  Give yourself time to digest before laying down for the night.
  4. Do not fight the insomnia- if you are struggling to get to sleep, get out of bed.  Do some other activity until you are tired again and ready to sleep.  You want to associate your bed with sleep only, not with struggle.

Consistent application of these techniques will help you overcome the terrible downward spiral that is depression and fatigue.
